The Garden for Global Warming was designed by myself (Meleri McEwan) early in 2007. It was on view at New Hopetoun Gardens for most of the year, as part of the Avant Gardens festival, and has now been dismantled.

I wanted to show that there were plenty of simple ways of reducing your carbon footprint within a small garden space. I was delighted that it was voted the 'People's Choice' garden, and shortlisted for the Eco Prize, partly because I had never designed a garden before, but also because I wanted this message to reach as wide an audience as possible.

I developed this website to make the garden accessible to more people, and for a longer timescale than the actual garden. In 2008 I have added lots more links to other websites with relevant information.

I particularly enjoyed a visit to the garden by Blackness Primary School's Eco Group, whose members tasted nasturtium leaves and fed the worms. The pupils were inspired to build their own raised beds, and in 2008 started growing fruit and veg.

My background is in retail buying and textile design, and I have been interested in environmental issues for many years. I have my own veg patch at home, but I wouldn't describe myself as an expert gardener - children, footballs, pigeons, mice & moles conspire against maximum productivity! In 2008 I joined local group Linlithgow Climate Challenge, and am also the Secretary of the Linlithgow and District Allotment Society, campaigning for an allotment site for our 100+ members. I also design recycled wool cushions and throws, which are for sale via via All Things Green. I am a member of the Scottish Ecological Design Association and work closely with Black Dog Textiles.
