Grow some fruit & veg

There is a significant trend towards growing your own fruit & veg in the UK, with a third more fruit trees being sold in 2007 than the previous year, and the majority of seed sales now being edibles rather than ornamental plants.

  • The Edible Container Garden - fresh food from tiny spaces, by Michael Guerra A lovely book that does what it says on the tin! Based on the author's experience of creating a small but hugely productive garden in London, it includes information on growing on roofs, balconies, windowsills and in small gardens, types of container, soil and suitable plants.
  • The Vacant Lot project in London is an inspiring example of growing edibles in an unlikely setting, creating a temporary allotment using 1/2 tonne bags, and growing community spirit at the same time
